Sugar – My Heroin (Part 3)

Get Leverage! You don’t know what you don’t know…

Life over the past 30 years has become increasingly busy. Roles in the home have changed, jobs have changed, and technology has changed. It is more common to have two working parents than it is to have only one. The extreme advances in mobile technology has meant that the work we didn’t finish today and would have pick up tomorrow, now get’s done tonight. We commute further, work longer hours, spend more time in front of the TV - want to spend more time with kids and as a result the time and energy we spend on how we feed ourselves and our families has taken a beating.

I couldn’t tell you how many people I talk to about sugar and nutrition on a daily basis. What I can say is that of these less than one in 10 would concede that they could eat healthier. I don’t believe that the others are lying to me or themselves, I believe we don’t know what is in our food… because if we did, the average size of our waistlines; increased rate of obesity and type two diabetes wouldn’t be skyrocketing the way that these lifestyle diseases currently are.

During this past week again, I heard people talking about good sugars and bad sugars. If when you think of good sugars your mind takes you to fruit and then the likes of chocolate and cake as sources of bad sugar, for the sake of your waistline, heart and your overall health you are part of the 99% of the population that would benefit from a bit of education. The truth of this matter is, there are no good or bad sugars, there is just sugar… Yes, there is more to this statement that simply that and tomorrow we will get into more detail on that. For now, know that as a male you hit your recommended daily intake of sugar if you ate:

  • 2 large (136g) bananas; OR
  • 2 medium (182g) apples; OR
  • 2¼ large (184g) oranges.

Ladies the news is even more shocking for you… make that:

  • 1½ bananas; OR
  • 1¼ medium apples; OR
  • 1½ oranges to hit your daily recommended intake.

The average Kiwi consumes 54kg of sugar every year! That equates to 37 teaspoons of sugar per day. When the daily recommended amount is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 for men, I think you’d agree that we have some work to do and changes to make.

Now do I have your attention? …Are you still certain that you’re eating a healthy diet? …If you find this disclosure shocking, you feel this way because you don’t know what you don’t know. Let’s change that! I will be taking you on a research path that will empower you to make better choices about the foods you choose while at the same time, changing the way you feel about sugar.
