Cakes and Cardio!

Last week I was tasked with coming up with a birthday cake for my son’s 8th birthday. I must confess I have baked cakes before… with mixed results. Don’t be fooled by that statement into believing that I have experience in that department, I don’t. Had I been wearing a heart rate monitor when the task request/instruction was made, a significant elevation would have been visible! Not being one to shy away from a new adventure or challenge, I was more than happy to shake off a few cobwebs from the creative expression skill set and give this a go.

There I was standing at the kitchen bench, looking down at the picture and plotting just how I achieve the outcome we want!

That’s right, a winking emoji cake…. Thankfully there are millions of experienced and successful cake bakers who write recipe books for people like me. I wouldn’t for a minute say that I am great at following instructions, especially when I think I know the subject, but this was different, I wanted a cake with a cool smiley face… I was out of my depth and I needed to be precise, I mean there’s a reason the recipe says 2 cups of flour and not 1 right? Of course there is.

I use this analogy of baking a cake because almost daily I hear people talking to other members or trainers about how they put so much effort into their training and their nutrition, yet they are not seeing the results they want or deserve. Just like baking a cake, there is a recipe to achieving results with our health and body.

Many people have built their body by following a recipe (in our industry a training program and nutritional plan). So when someone says they will do the cardio but will only do weights in classes yet their program requires resistance training, it’s a bit like adding all the right ingredients - eggs, sugar, cocoa etc but then leaving the flour out of the cake recipe – at best you’re likely to get would be a chocolate flavoured eggnog!  

When we follow the recipe, trust the process and believe that the professional that has put your plan in place has done so for the reason and outcome that you want, anything is possible, whether you are a gym bunny or a first timer taking on a body challenge.
