Takeaway foods and the choices we make

By: Quinton de Bruin After a long week, it is always nice to come home and someone else has done the cooking. What if they too have had a long week and the kids are screaming for dinner. Naturally there is always the option to suck it up and get into the kitchen and whip up a dish Jamie Oliver would get excited about! However, we also know that this is not always possible when the day has run out of hours. Today was one of those days for me. I was up at 5.30am and slightly fatigued from a ...

Sweet as! Sugar or artificial sweetener?

By: Quinton de Bruin Happy Thursday! It was a great day across in the Bay of Plenty and I decided that I would make the most of the time there by using a gym membership I had failed to cancel to get a workout in before heading back this way – I knew there was a good reason I hadn't cancelled it! I do enjoy the starts I get on a Thursday there. I meet with a group of fantastic small business owners to discuss our businesses and generally have a good time with many laughs. I had my standard...

Why?

By: Quinton de Bruin There are so many directions a topic like that can take you in the health and fitness industry. Today however I would like to talk about the reason people make decisions about their health, their shape, their fitness and so on. We see people out running in the summer, others pounding the treadmill or spin bike next to us in the cardio space and the vast array of reasons for being there in itself is motivational! I was training next to a young lady this morning at 6.30i...

Knowledge is power – or is it dangerous?

By: Quinton de Bruin Over a week into the challenge and I think it is only natural to be wondering what the actual progress is. We spoke about trusting the process when you have done your homework and that is a given. The thing about progress is that it happens on a continuum with a wee bit of improvement in your skin folds / weight loss / speed on the one end and on the other you have the mind-blowing WOW – how did you do that result! So, as we progress through day nine, just shy of a thir...

Making the lifestyle about family

By: Quinton de Bruin Let's go with the fact that this is the second instalment on why the challenge I am taking part in is about a shift in lifestyle, so a bit more than just the Wild challenge. When I think about the turns life takes without notice and then one goes and chooses to throw a change in there by choice, and not just any change but a lifestyle change. When I think of a lifestyle change I feel for the people that live with me and in my inner circle – they get to live it with me. ...

Cheat Meal day! …and 7 tips to avoid summer BBQ weight gain

By: Quinton de Bruin Well the first week is drawing to a close. It has been a great week all things considered. Generally speaking, the training side of things has been reasonably straight forward. I have been able to have a workout of sorts on the days I wanted to. The meals have been fine and as I have said before, it is not like the foods are all that different to what I would normally have anyway, I would just be a bit more specific in my choices. Being a firm believer in celebrating s...

Why friends could cost you your goal and the better choices on the café menu

By: Quinton de Bruin Day six and it has been a stunning day with temperatures hovering around the mid-twenties. It really wasn't difficult to get out and active and as we were out on a bike ride, I was thinking about tomorrow's breakfast – odd thought and for no real reason. I had just had breakfast and it was a nice spinach, egg and fish combo so I wasn't hungry. The thought of it being a long weekend made me think of having a family breakfast at a café. That thought led onto what to have...

Do not eat these foods! 6 foods that make you fat.

By: Quinton de Bruin It's Friday and day five. Truth be told, I am slightly nervous of the weekends, I have historically been a bit loose with my nutritional discipline over weekends. That said, I am acutely more aware that there are friends and family around that keep me on track and my son telling me I have a fat roll is always motivational! I have had a few people ask me about what they can and can't eat, what they should or shouldn't eat. For this reason, I thought I would put it out t...

When your world feels like it’s falling apart and the plan’s out the window!

By: Quinton de Bruin Think of those days (for me, today is one of them) which can be best described by visualising yourself having been hit by a bus after leaving the cap off the blender holding (for a slit second) the contents of your breakfast smoothie! Yes, one of those days where the time you put into planning the day could clearly have been spent better taking care of all the extra bits that got thrown on your desk to take care of. Great, now we are on the same page…. if you have not e...

Cardio – a lot like shopping for shoes!

By: Quinton de Bruin Now that I have all the attention of the ladies, it's a rather odd comparison I'll give you that, but hear me out. The thought came to me while training this morning. This is dangerous territory but hey it keeps things interesting. I give women credit when it comes to shopping, they have this unbelievable ability (it almost qualifies as a skill) to spot a deal or sale. It could be happening on a website for a shop in a totally different city and before you know it you h...

The universal principle of PROCESS!

By: Quinton de Bruin In my very short 41 years of life I can categorically state that there has never been a time when we have expected things to happen faster than we do now. Flicking through the Yellow Pages for a phone number; running to the Real Groovy store for the latest CD release; waiting for the shops to open in the morning so you can get a shirt you like or heading into the travel agent to book a holiday (yes for those of you under 25 that really used to happen!) That was the norm; t...

The day it all began!

By: Quinton de Bruin The title makes it sound so dramatic, doesn't it? Today was the first day of the challenge and boy was it a cracker! Early start and managed to do a few of the important things at the start of any commitment, measure the current state! I am happy to put the scale away for the 30 days, I weighed in at 112kgs and skinfolds indicated my body fat is currently at 16%. At 1.96m tall one can hide a few extra kilos but the skinfold measurements aren't fooled! I'll take my own a...

The day before the day before

By: Quinton de Bruin We can all think back to an event that we prepared for with vigour. Whether it was reading up on the birth of a child, training for a sporting event, meditating or learning for an exam at school or uni – when you get closer you start feeling confident that you have done what it takes or as much as you can. We can also have a little LOL when you think back to when that event happened – I'm thinking about the birth of my son – man I could have read every book on havin...

What? 12-month free gym membership - Cheat-meals and exercise – bring on the challenge!

By: Quinton de Bruin Excited? Yes we will get to the free membership soon, but first, burning body fat is a game of inches and like any sport, the difference between good players and great ones is not always a superior skill-level, it is more often the case of doing the small things right more often than the next guy. The last few days have armed us with information to help us do the small things right and the rate or effectiveness of the challenge will rely solely on our ability to eat and exe...

Quality beats quantity hand down (in this case body fat down) every time

By: Quinton de Bruin Whether it's because I'm doing the research or writing, there is a sense of excitement and confirmation that meat and eggs aren't the enemy they have been made out to be. Great news when they are elements you love in most meals! With a focus on stocking our kitchen with quality foods, first prize would go to locally sourced fresh organic fruits and vegetables coupled with meat from grass-fed pasture raised animals. Being a price conscious person, the thought of having ...

Foods, Chocolate and Alcohol

By: Quinton de Bruin Food has become such a fashionable industry, the number of cooking shows has boomed, books and celebrity chefs have gained in popularity. Marketers have leveraged this in a phenomenal manner. With all this hype and messaging around what's good and what's not, it's no wonder that people are trying one fad diet after another. Gym staff and nutritionists are pulling their hair out almost having to convince clients that the answer isn't in the bottom of a pill bottle, it is...

Getting fat, burning fat and macronutrients …oh not all fats are equal

By: Quinton de Bruin With the pace at which we live today, it can feel like the mind is a bit like a train station, thoughts coming in and leaving constantly. It is only a matter of time before some thoughts receive the Koru Club treatment and we give them the time of day, focus on them, study them and place those centre stage. Conversely, we have dismissed other thoughts, relying on those "in the know" to make the decisions for us because we are too busy with the big stuff! Doing this with th...

Priorities, results and things you really need to know!

By: Quinton de Bruin While I was digesting content for the last post, I got some warm fuzzy feelings. Even in my lifetime to date our lifestyles have changed so much. Mealtimes used to be occasions, the family would sit down around the table for a meal and it could take substantial time as there was story telling of the day's events and all round a good time. In my own life, meals have become something I need to do – almost as if it is a hurdle to cross before moving onto the next 'importa...

Wisdom, confusion and health foods that aren’t healthy

By: Quinton de Bruin As we enter the last week before the challenge kicks off, I feel there is still a fair amount of info I need to share to give you a full picture of the lifestyle we are talking about here. Seven days…the thought of taking some measurements and being held accountable to those in 30 days does raise my level of anxiety! The thing about numbers is (and being in finance, one would hope I know this) they don't lie. I am not talking about weight measurement in isolation, we're c...

Welcome modern “Man”

By: Quinton de Bruin The image of someone sitting on the couch, eating a bowl of chips and a cheese stuffed crust pizza and washing it down with a beer while catching the latest rugby game is a distinctly different one a man wearing animal skins, spear in hand hunting for his next meal. Over time we have created an environment that is based on convenience, the next big thing is something that makes life easier. And in terms of food, that is bringing the hunting for food into the local superma...

Why do a Challenge if it drives you wild?

By: Quinton de Bruin Why would you take on a challenge when challenges drive you wild? Well in the true sense of the word, being challenged I have no problem. What I do get annoyed by is broad, general and sweeping statements that are misleading and disempowers people to be able to make informed choices about their health, diet and lifestyle. I believe in many cases this happens as no mistake. I think back to my days as a student (yes it was a fair while ago now) and I clearly remember thi...

Well by Q

By: Quinton de Bruin – 20 January 2017 As you and your friends return to work after the summer break, it's only a matter of time before you begin to reminisce about the great times had with family and friends and then the way your clothes seem to have shrunk in the clothes drier again this summer as a result – damn that thing! Where possible I have continued to hit the gym with the view of countering the food and drink from the night before or the one to come - really testing the calories...

Why is drinking hot lemon water in the morning good for you?

-Based on research done by Dieticians and Nutritionists: Melisssa Gunderson, Carly Dolan, Alina Petre, Shari Hussenbocus, Mayura Naik At the moment, there aren't any enough scientific studies to support the claim of the health benefits of lemons water in the morning, but surely there must be some truth behind it – as most of us have heard the claim:...
