The thing about caffeine and the secret to extremely fast weight loss!

While enjoying a great weekend at Whitianga with friends, the topic of coffee and caffeine came up. Now I am one of those people who has been drinking coffee for many years and I am well entrenched in one of the many beautiful things of New Zealand – the coffee culture. I love my morning coffee and I'm happy to meet you at a café! Yet one of the people in the discussion mentioned that they have only ever had a coffee once and it caused them real discomfort - we're talking dizziness, feeling sick and obviously not able to sleep. There are many breakfasts in the Wild Diet meal plan, one of them being a "Fatty Coffee" (the ingredients are black coffee, MCT oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides oil – which makes up in the region of 62% of coconut oil) or coconut oil and an optional extra is butter, ghee or heavy cream). Not quite my thing but not too far from this and available at most cafes is a Vienna – try it, basically it is a short black or espresso with a blob of cream on top.

So, the question whether coffee is good for you or not – I am holding up thumbs…

It turns out that there is more to coffee than just a sharp kick in the energy levels. It turns out that drinking coffee can reduce the risk of cancer – particularly colon and prostate cancer. Not only that, it also reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Let's not get too excited just yet, coffee apparently is not a miracle food (man it has worked some miracles for me!) Like most things, we need to be mindful of what goes into our coffee. The studies above are based on coffee consumption not mochas, lattes with flavoured syrups, of coffee with ice-cream and sprinkles. From processed sugar through to dairy – it's the add-ins which seem to cause the greatest issues – ouch, there goes the cream!

Who am I to judge, what does someone in the know have to say? Here is what Mark Sisson says: "The overwhelming majority of the observational literature finds that coffee is linked to lower body weight and protection from type 2 diabetes. [To get the most out of your coffee,] get up and move around a bit when you drink. Since coffee has just liberated a bunch of fatty acids from your adipose tissue, use them! If you don't, the bulk of those fatty acids will simply be recycled back into your body fat. Remember that coffee isn't just caffeine. It is a whole plant food/drink with hundreds of bioactive compounds beyond just caffeine…. the taste and health effects of coffee thusly depend on dozens of factors, and that's why coffee has different effects on different people as reflected across dozens of studies."

With that gem, I will quit while I am ahead. Coffee lives another day in my kitchen and I'd be lying if I said I'm not pleased with that outcome – albeit a short and clearly one-sided argument.

While working on some marketing research today, I was hit square between the eyes with a thought. To a point we have spoken about this silver bullet of fast weight loss we are hunting down. I don't use the word hunting loosely either. Marketers have taken us deeper and deeper into a maze or forest – you pick. When you get too far in and you believe that surely you must be closer to the silver bullet than heading back to the old reality of diet and exercise, one keeps tracking forward. The further we go the more we believe and want to believe that there is a silver bullet. We will make sacrifices for it, pay large sums of money for it. Companies create teas to detox and shakes to drink. More self-disclosure – I remember a box of pills I bought that looked a bit like the Omega-3 fish oil capsules and apparently when you drank them the fat was attracted to them and then passed through your body! Stop laughing! Looking back now I have a giggle too don't worry.

I would like to think that when these companies make this stuff they truly want to help people. My concern is that the results for these are not great, yes people drop large amounts of weight in a short period of time. What we seem to forget is that fat is not the only component in the body that has weight. Reducing weight fast usually means you have dropped something that will come back just as fast… if not faster.

Not exactly the news our instant gratification generation wants to hear unfortunately. What do you mean I can't lose weight as fast as I can download a new track on Spotify? Okay apologies you twisted my arm, I couldn't resist any longer, the other side of the proverbial forest; the secret you are not to share with anyone. I can track who shares this blog so be wary. This is for your eyes only! Losing weight has never been this easy – you don't need to do anything… but be human. Sound too good to be true? Well it's not, in the true sense of the word – being human means living and one of the basic human needs to live is food. I took this to the source of all truths – Google, and typed in "what foods do humans eat" …. Oh, did you think I was going to do everything for you? So sorry to disappoint! Don't take my word for it anyway go to Google for yourself and pop those words in the search box – your silver bullet awaits.
While you do that, know that today is my training day off but it would have been rude in Whitianga not to walk along the beach, so we did (I can't believe I cheated on my training program on my cheat meal day). I enjoyed some BBQ bacon and eggs and had a sneaky naughty Subway 6 inch 3 pepper chicken - no bacon or avocado though. I had to laugh when the poor girl asked, seeing as I wrote about that only a couple of days ago. Dinner tonight was lovely spicy chicken thighs and a mixed leafy green salad with broccoli, peas, chillies, courgettes and a few more amazing veggies and for dessert I am really looking forward to some Whittakers Ghana Dark chocolate.
